My dear long lost Sprite kitty. On my way home tonight I saw a feral cat who looked like her, and moved with the same close to the ground lope that she had.
Photos of Monument, Oregon, the surrounding areas, and other things of natural beauty.

Scorched Earth
Trees at Yellowstone burned many years ago in a big forest fire. Amazing how long it's been and they still look freshly burned.

Hearst Castle Pool
I wonder what it takes to get an invitation to a pool party here? The rest of Hearst Castle was interesting, but the pool is definitely the most breathtaking sight in the complex. One impressive factoid about Julia Morgan that I didn't know before this tour: She was educated as a civil engineer before she went to architecture school. For the Hearst complex, she designed a spring-fed, gravity assisted filtered water system that is still in use, providing water to the house, the visitor center, and the town of San Simeon. Wow.

Halcyon Days
A wild Oregon sunflower graces the early evening sky on one of those endless summer days. On a blustery day like this, it's a welcome reminder of summers to come.

View of the neighborhood
A view of the John Day river valley, looking east from Monument. This landscape seems too idyllic and unspoiled to be real; but here it is.

Here's your ghost llama
When we moved here, some local told us a tall tale of a Ghost Llama. The Ghost Llama is supposed to inhabit the hill above the garbage dump. Noone had ever been able to confirm his existence, though many had supposedly seen him. He is rumored to be fierce and outlandishly large. He appears out of the brush without a sound, then vanishes in a puff of wind.
Well, here's your ghost llama, captured on film. He was indeed on the hill above the dump, calmly grazing with the cattle. He's maybe a little larger than average, and did not seem at all fierce, though we stayed out of spitting distance.
Reality didn't quite live up to the legend. But it's still kind of neat to know that he's up there.

Courtrock Road
Looking back towards Monument from Courtrock Road. The blazing blue of a clear desert sky is even larger than this vast landscape.

Snow abstraction
I think this abstract tangle of snow and branches looks very painterly in a saturated blue. I prefer it to the natural appearance of the photo. What do you think?

Kimberly Orchards in the fall
Looking out at the North Fork of the John Day River, and the Kimberly Orchards. The fruit trees' colorful fall foliage changes from one grove to the next, a colorful patchwork.

Orchard Fire
The fruit trees at Kimberly Orchards are bursting with fall color. They look amazing against the deep blue of the fall sky, the muted reds of the rimrock, and the drab sage.

Monument through the lens
A frosty winter morning in Monument. One of my photographic inspirations has always been the photography in National Geographic. I am especially moved by the 'slice-of-life' photos of urban and rural areas that show the soul of a locale without glossing over the grit. I hope this photo conveys some of the beauty of Monument, along with the hardscrabble existence that living here brings.

Buffalo, Yellowstone
This big beefy dude was hanging out by himself. Doesn't he look both terrifying and delicious?
