A wild Oregon sunflower graces the early evening sky on one of those endless summer days. On a blustery day like this, it's a welcome reminder of summers to come.

View of the neighborhood
A view of the John Day river valley, looking east from Monument. This landscape seems too idyllic and unspoiled to be real; but here it is.

Here's your ghost llama
When we moved here, some local told us a tall tale of a Ghost Llama. The Ghost Llama is supposed to inhabit the hill above the garbage dump. Noone had ever been able to confirm his existence, though many had supposedly seen him. He is rumored to be fierce and outlandishly large. He appears out of the brush without a sound, then vanishes in a puff of wind.
Well, here's your ghost llama, captured on film. He was indeed on the hill above the dump, calmly grazing with the cattle. He's maybe a little larger than average, and did not seem at all fierce, though we stayed out of spitting distance.
Reality didn't quite live up to the legend. But it's still kind of neat to know that he's up there.
